Gadhouse Vinyl Club: Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong – Ella and Louis (1956)

What a lovely day that you can stay in your home and listen to your favorite songs among the rain drops on the window, lazily do nothing! Ella and Louis (1956) by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald is a smashing album to create such a kind of that mood.

More than ten years ago when I was a primary school student, I found a CD of Armstrong and Fitzgerald, which is Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD) by Verve Records in my father’s private home theater room (its house prohibited area since those times until now) it was my first time I listened to Armstrong’s songs beside the famous “What a wonderful world” likewise my first time listening to Fitzgerald’s songs.

Louis Armstrong is eminent as Satchmo or Satchel mouth for his mouth acting as a satchel. He is great-talented trumpeter, composer and singer. His career last long from the 1920’s to the 1960’s and Ella Fitzgerald is praised as the queen of jazz, her career was active last long since 1930’s to 1990’s. Both of them have quite long story to tell from the humble root become stars.

Ella and Louis (1956) is their first collaboration of the whole three related albums with the Verve records later came with Ella and Louis Again (1957) and Porgy and Bess (1959).

The selected eleven songs are standard ballads written by legendary songwriters such as They Can’t Take That Away from Me by George Gershwin or the talented but died young pianist and composer who wrote Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris.

The charm of this album is the purity of music, the backing track was played by famous Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson and his Quartet as well as the singing of Double morale, which is lively, even though it was studio recording but they sang naturally with smile like singing in front of the audiences in live concert. Ella and Louis (1956) was presented on The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015.
